According to the official crew roster of the heavy cruiser U.S.S Houston (CVA-30), Seaman First Class Rodger J. Hanson, was wounded in action on February 4, 1942. The Houston was then involved in the Battle of Makassar Strait. Japanese air raids were frequent in the area, and U.S.S Houston's gunners shot down four Japanese planes in the Bali Sea. On that day, February 4, 1942, the Houston took one bomb hit, disabling the number three turret. This was the first significant loss of life on the ship due to enemy action. Thirty-six men of the Houston died that day, and Rodger was one of several who were wounded. Gravely injured, Rodger and two other sailors of the Houston would die from their wounds a day later, February 5, 1942. Mention of Rodger is found in the book, page 203, "The ghost that died at Sunda Strait", by Walter G. Winslow · 1984
