Mrs. Nancy Adams
Nancy Catherine Hardman, daughter of Thomas and Mary Hardman, was born January 20, 1874, in Lee county, Iowa, and died August 27, 1934, at Milton, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 7 days.
April 4, 1867, she was married to Jeremiah Adams and they journeyed together a little over fifty years. Mr. Adams being called by death not long after celebrating their golden wedding in 1917. They spent their early married life on a farm in Missouri, moving to Milton, Iowa, in 1900.
The span of this good woman's life covered a period in which she was a keen observer of the making of the history of her country, and though for many years past in very frail health and a "shut-in", she kept posted daily in regard to world transformations.
She was converted in early girlhood and joined the M.E. church, and was an ardent worker in all church activities, her fondness for boys being expresed(err) in teaching their class in Sunday school for many years. Though for many years past, deprived of church attendance, she kept in touch with all church and community interests. Her telephone was often in use making inquiries and making helpful suggestions.
No children came to bless the home of this couple, but her love for children was not to be denied and ten orphan children were taken into the home and received the kindly administrations of this man and woman. Of these, two, Mrs. B.L. Kennedy, of Grange, Mo., and William C. Baggott, of Milton, Iowa, were faithful to her to the last, and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Emily Baggott, and her trusted friend and companion, Miss Lydia Perkins, tenderly cared for and nursed her through repeated severe attacks of illness.
One grandson, William Norris Baggott, also survives. One sister, Mrs. Mary Daniels, of Cleo Springs, Oklahoma, with several nieces and nephews, as well as a host of friends also mourn her death.
Her funeral was held in Grace Methodist Episcopal church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. W.B. Ireland; music being rendered by Mrs. Ruth Sherwood, Mrs. Hazel Brady, J.C. Caughlan and A.L. Lasley. Mrs. Beryl Gilchrist presided at the piano.
The casket attendants were Lloyd Summers, W.D. Sherwood, Charles Brady, Chester Brady, James Luman and Morris Atkins.
