Helen Louise Hardman Denbigh, 83, of Spencer died Aug. 3, 2005, after a long illness.

She was born April 4, 1922, in Spencer, a daughter of the late Owen Ruby and Grace Holswade Hardman. She was a 1940 graduate of Spencer High School and attended Stephens College, Columbia, Mo., and West Virginia University. She was married to Peter Denbigh, a pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1943. After World War II, they moved to Spencer to start a life and family together. She kept a second home in Bamfield, British Columbia, for several years after returning to Spencer.

She was the corporate secretary of Denbigh-Garrett Ford Motor Company, Spencer, and had also worked at Roane General Hospital, Spencer, when it first opened. She was involved in many community activities, including having served 30 years with the American Red Cross as a certified water safety instructor, and was the Spencer Municipal Pool manager, producer and director of the Spencer Water Carnival, auctioneer's clerk for the Spencer Livestock Exchange, a Black Walnut Festival volunteer for over 30 years, a charter member of the Spencer Garden Club (later Hill & Hollow Garden Club,) Roane County Library volunteer, Cub Scout den mother, Roane County Arts & Humanities, Toys for Tots, and coordinator of the West Virginia Heritage Quilt Search. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and of St. John's United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Anna King Circle. She was an avid seashell collector and later donated her extensive collection to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Among other things, she enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, ballroom dancing, antiques and gardening.

She is survived by a daughter, Anna Neale and her husband, Paul Taylor, of Spencer; a son, John Denbigh and his wife, Karen, of Spencer; a sister, Anna Neale Houck Samworth of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Charles O. Hardman and his wife, Mary, of Spencer; one granddaughter, Lisa Perry Denbigh of Charleston; two grandsons, Nathan Gerencir and his wife, Lauren, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Peter Denbigh of Harrisonburg, Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Denbigh; and a sister, Gwendolyn Hardman Jackson.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at St. John's United Methodist Church, Spencer, with the Rev. Arthur Tucker and the Rev. David Calvert officiating. Burial will be in Spencer Memorial Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer.
