Mrs. Martha H. Allen, Retired Teacher, Dies
Mrs. Martha H. Allen, retired teacher and member of a well-known Floyd county family, died here Oct. 19 at the age of 84.
Eldest daughter of the late Kate Leslie and Robert Walker Harris, she was born at West Prestonsburg, August 26, 1895. She was married to James Richard (Bunt) Allen, who preceded her in death in 1968.
Educated in the old Prestonsburg Baptist Institute and the local public schools, she was a member of the first graduating class of Prestonsburg High School, together with her sister, the late Mrs. Ella Harris Wellman, the late Miss Anna Martin, and the late Mrs. Susan Porter Elliott. She attended Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College (now Eastern State University) at Richmond, and after graduation taught in the Floyd and Knott county schools until her retirement.
Mrs. Allen was a member of the First United Methodist Church, of Hindman, a lifelong member of Adah Chapter No. 24, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Kentucky and Big Sandy Historical Societies. She was also a member of the national, state and local Retired Teachers' Association.
She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Fannie Runnels, Mrs. Grace Sutherland and Miss Alice Harris, all of Prestonsburg, and several nieces and nephews.
A ritual in her memory was presented by Adah Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Sunday evening at the Carter Funeral Home.
The funeral, at the First United Methodist Church, was held Monday afternoon, with the Rev. Walter Applegate and the Rev. Taylor Biggs, officiating. Interment was in the Allen family cemetary at Hueysville.
Pallbearers were Maurice Allen, Volney Allen, D. Keith Leslie, Hubert Allen, Floyd Allen, Brent Allen, Joe Michael Allen, Freddie Goble and Curtis Reid Burchett.
