Helen F. Benth, 72, Sheridan, died Tuesday of natural causes at the V.A. Medical Center.
Mrs. Benth was born Feb. 27, 1919, to Charles and Mabel Hartford in Brockton, Mass. She grew up and graduated from high school in Quincy, Mass., and served in the Womens Army Corps during World War II.
She married Bud Benth in Quincy, Feb. 22, 1946. They moved to South Dakota and to Sheridan in 1952.
Mrs. Benth retired as Chief of Voluntary Service at the VA Medical Center after working there many years.
She was a member of American Legion Post 7 and was the first woman to serve as Post Commander. She was also the State Dept. Commander and the National Publicity Officer for the State. She served on committees for Boys State, Girl State, Poppies, the high school rodeo, baseball, Avenue of Flags and auxiliary.
A member of the Womens Army Corps Veterans Association, she was a Gold Star Sister and belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Society of Mayflower Descendants.
Locally she worked with the Civic Theatre Guild, the Red Cross board, the Sheridan-Wyo-Rodeo board, the All-American Indian Days board and Trinity Lutheran Church.
Her parents and a brother, Herbert Hartford, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband; four sons, Bud Benth, Jr. and Steve Benth, Sheridan; Barry Benth, Bremerton, Wash., Jody Benth,Tucson, Ariz., a brother, Charles Hartford, Reading, Mass.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Revs. Ronald Nelson and Ray Clark officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. with arrangements by Ferries Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery.
