Alice immigrated later in life at the age of 60 on June 13,1890, entering New York through Castle Garden aboard the ship "Germanic". She joined her daughters Mary and Honora, whom immigrated years earlier and had already started families in New Milford, Connecticut. Two of her other children accompanied Alice to the United States, daughter Delia Bridget and son John.
This journey was after the tragic death of beloved husband Martin Hastings in 1877. He died in a fishing accident near the mouth of the River Shannon during a storm.
