Edwin was the son of Manly Hawley and Amanda Berray. He was raised in Ohio and is said at one time to have been the foreman of the famous King Ranch of Texas. In the 1870's he lived on what is still called Hawley Creek near Leador, Idaho.
He married on October 24, 1878, Bannack, Montana, to Mrs. Christena Catherine Winters Yearian, widow of Joseph Bell Yearian.
They took up horse ranching at Clyde, Idaho, in the Little Lost River Valley. The name Clyde came from the fact that he and his brother, Dewain B. Hawley, introduced the Clydesdale horse to Idaho as a draft animal. They became known as "The Horse Kings of Idaho". The mountain range along the valley is known as the Hawley Mountains.
