Shirley "Sherry" (Hemming) Garwood, beloved wife of the late E. Peter Garwood, and Simsbury resident for 35 years, died on Sunday, (August 31, 2008) at her home surrounded by her loving family. She resided at 51 Stratton Forest Way in Simsbury, Connecticut at the time of her death.


Born in New Haven, she attended New Haven State Teachers College and Colby Jr. College. She was employed by SNET before joining the WAVES during World War II where she attained the rank of Lt JG. Long active in the Simsbury community, she was a member of the First Church of Christ and served on the boards of both McLean Auxiliary and the Simsbury Woman's Club. A supporter of the arts, Mrs. Garwood loved music and theatre and was a member of Charter Oak Garden Club, Simsbury Historical Society, and Child and Family Services. Personally, she was a champion against any social injustice, believing in equality and the inherent goodness of all people. She was honored as a Simsbury Hometown Hero in 1997 and will be remembered for her love of travel, bridge, and entertaining her many friends.


She leaves her daughters and their husbands, Christine and Robert Bogino of Avon, Andrea and Peter Littleton of Garnet Valley, PA, and Cynthia and Emory Dively of St. Paul, MN; her son Peter H. Garwood of Rocky Hill; seven grandchildren Jeff Bogino, Michael Bogino, Peter Littleton, Jr., Aaron Littleton, Jay.Tucker Littleton, Emory David Dively, and Erica Dively; and her brother Howard Hemming of Milford. Besides her husband she was predeceased by two sons, Jonathan and Jeffrey Garwood and a brother Carleton Hemming.


A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the First Church of Christ, 689 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury. A reception will follow the service.
Burial will be in Simsbury Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
