First born child of John & Martha (Leithch) Herschell. The baby was only 2 months and 6 days old when it passed away. John was a blacksmith and used his skills to build a decorative wrought iron fence around the small plot of land that held his infant's remains. In the back of the fence, he wove the day of it's birth and death. On the front, he made a gate and over the gate he placed another decorative iron with the surname "Herschell". Underneath the surname he placed a heart.
A few months ago, I was doing research on William Miller Herschell, a famous Hooiser poet, and discovered the story of his older sibling. I went in search of the grave and found it. Of course time, the elements and perhaps even vandalism had taken its toll on the memorial of love that had been put forth by the father. Pieces of the fence were missing, the iron with the surname was broken off, the gate was missing and weeds were grown up, covering most of the grave. There wasn't even a stone. There wasn't anything to let us know if the baby was a boy or girl. The neglected grave saddened me. My husband and I decided to clean up the area and decorate it. I hope somehow Baby Herschell knows that someone does care about him/her. I wanted to put up a simple stone for the child but found out that it will cost close to $800 for a simple stone. I can't afford that but vow to keep the site in good shape and hopefully someday raise the money to put up a marker for this innocent baby.
