Frances June Arey, 91, of South Charleston passed away Saturday, February 26, 2011, at Dunbar Care and Rehabilitation. She was born April 10, 1919, and was a daughter of the late Charles T. and Bessie Barnette Higginbotham. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leander G. Arey Sr.; and brothers, Andrew and Charles Higginbotham. Frances was a retired registered nurse and nursing supervisor at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston. She was a U.S. Army veteran and nurse, having served during WWII. Frances was a member of the Independent Missionary Baptist Church, Alum Creek, and the Order of the Eastern Star, South Charleston Chapter. Surviving: sons and their spouses, Charles A. and Donna Arey of Nitro and Leander "Bud" and Laura Arey of St. Albans; daughter and her spouse, Barbara and Marlin Vandall of Alum Creek; grandchildren and their spouses, Thomas E. Johnston, Jennifer and Bobby Hackney, Melinda and Lou Keemer, C. Travis and Julie Arey, Jessica Arey, Robert and Amy Arey, Patrick and Kasey Arey; and 13 great-grandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, at Good Shepherd Mortuary, 335 Fifth Ave., South Charleston, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
