Clela Belle Hillman Alfrey,
formerly of Worthington, died Tuesday evening, November 20, 2007, at Oakmont Manor. She was born December 27, 1920, in Elliot County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Harry and Olive Hunneycutt Hillman. She graduated from Raceland High School and later graduated from
Ashland Beauty College. She operated Clela?s Beauty Shop in Worthington for several years. She was a talented singer, songwriter and musician, playing the guitar, bass and autoharp. She married another musician, Virgil Alfrey, in 1942, and they performed together as a duo and in other musical groups until the mid to late 1990?s. Clela was also a popular columnist in several local newspapers, writing a column about country music that highlighted many up and coming musicians and groups from the Tri-State area. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband and a brother, John ?Waxie? Hillman of Russell. She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Froman, of Ashland, one son, one daughter and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 24, 2007, at the Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A private burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Clela may make a memorial contribution to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Avenue, Ashland, Kentucky 41101.
