Died, at German Prairie, near Springfield, ILL., May 2, 1891, Mrs. Elthea (Hinkley) Barrows, wife of Franklin Barrows. Mrs. Barrows was born Aug. 1, 1804, in Lewis, Essex County, N. Y. Her parents went there from the state of Massachusetts, being among the pioneer settlers of that region. Feb. 3, 1831, she was married To Franklin Barrows of Bridport, Vt. After a few years residence in Bridport, they moved to Lewis, N. Y., where they lived until 1855, when they came to Springfield and had their home in the city for more than twenty years. Since then they have spent the time with their children, the last five and a half years with their daughter, Mrs. Francis.
Of seven children, two died in infancy, five are living. Emily L, widow of Rev. Simon Barrows, late of Neligh, Neb.; Prentice C. of DeSoto, Ia; Abbie C., wife of James S. Francis of German Prairie; William M. of Jefferson County, Missouri; and Clara O., wife of George J. Lord of Emerson, Ia.
Mrs. Barrows, with her husband made a public profession of faith in Christ in 1831, uniting with the Congregational church of Bridport. Going back to Lewis they united with the Congregational church there. Coming to Springfield they were members of the Second Presbyterian church until the organization of the First Congregational church of this place. They were among the original members and never relinquished their membership.
Mrs. Barrows was a woman of rare gentleness and amiability of character, a devoted wife and mother. Retiring in disposition, unassuming in manner, she yet held decided opinions and marked firmness of principle. This with her clearness of judgment won the confidence of all who knew her well.
The funeral services were at the house. The burial was at Oak Ridge.
