OBITUARY: MRS. ANNA BARBARA HIMMELEIN
Mrs. Anna Barbara Himmelein of Prairie View, passed away Thursday, March 26, aged 75 years, 6 months and 16 days.
Mrs. Himmelein was born September 10, 1855, at Schoen in Wurttemburg, Germany, a daughter of Johann Georg Haag and his wife, Magdalena Schmidt. Having been baptized in early infancy at Freudenbach, Wurttemburg she was confirmed at Eckwerfofen, Bavaria, at the age of 14. In 1880, Anna Barbara Haag was united in marriage to Michael Georg Himmelein. This union was blessed with 12 children, six of whom survive their mother.
In the fall of 1880, the deceased came to America with her husband. The first winter they stayed in New York, and in 1881, they came west, to Phillips county, Kansas, settleing about two and a half miles west Stuttgart, which place has been the home of the deceased ever since.
Mrs. Himmelein has gone through the pioneer days in Phillips county. The hard work that was required by the first settlers undoubtedly told on her health. She has had several severe attacks of pneumonia from which she never entirely recovered. On January 20, 1920, her husband preceded her in death. Since then her health declined gradually. Especially winter time brought on many ills. Last winter was one of the best she lived through. But this winter meant sickness and suffering for her. She had not left her home since the Sunday after New Years. For the last four weeks was bedfast, and on Thursday, March 26, at 3:30 a.m., the Lord called this weary pilgrim away from this vale of sorrow to her eternal home.
The deceased was a faithful Christian and a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran church, Stuttgart. As long as she was able she attended the divine services regularly. She did not complain very much even during her last weeks and days of suffering, having found comfort in the word and promises of God. Mediation on the Saviors sufferings and death was her spiritual foof in these last weeks.
Mrs. Himmelein leaves to mourn her departure 6 children with their families - two sons, George of Ludell, Kansas; Charley, with whom she has lived all these years; four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Merklein, Long Island; Mrs. Margaret Merklein, Stuttgart; Mrs. Marie Fischer and Mrs. Sophie Roberts, Billings, Montana; 11 grandchildren, two brothers in Germany, one sister, Mrs. Magdalena Balbach, a member of Wolf Creek church, and many other relatives and friends. She was laid to rest in the cemetery of Emmanuel Lutheran church of Stuttgart, Monday, March 30, the Rev. F. Krauss, pastor, officiating. May she rest in peace.
