Corning | Douglas Clara L. (Hofmann) 93 of Yarmouthport, MA died Sunday August 17, 2014 at the McCarthy Care Center in East Sandwich, MA.
She was the wife of the late Paul G. Douglas, who died in 2008. They met while he was attending the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, Mrs. Douglas was the daughter of the late Otto U. and Clara L. (Lautenslager) Hofmann.
Clara enjoyed a life-long love of music. She studied piano and violin at the Curtiss School of Music. Over the years she taught piano and sang in church choirs in Needham & Wellesley. She was a season ticket hold to the Boston Symphony Orchestra for many years.
Clara was very civic minded and engaged in a number of church & community activities. She was a past member of the Women's Auxiliary at Newton-Wellesley Hospital & at Cape Cod Hospital. She was an active volunteer at Christ Church in Needham, MA and St. Andrew's Church in Wellesley, MA, and a member of the Cape Cod Chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), to assist with academic scholarships for young women.
As proud as her husband was of his Scottish heritage, Clara was equally as proud of her Swiss heritage.
Clara, and her husband, were members of the Wellesley Country Club and the Brae Burn Country Club in West Newton. She also enjoyed golf, paddle tennis, and curling. She was rich in family and friends and her love, support, and special smile will be dearly missed.
Mrs. Douglas is survived by a daughter, Diane C. Douglas of Yarmouthport; two sons, David S. Douglas and his wife, Louise Baldwin of Ann Arbor, MI, and Paul H. Douglas and his wife, Dr. Kate Douglas of Corning, NY; a brother, H. William Hofmann of Huntingdon Valley, PA; two grandsons, Matthew I. Douglas and his wife, Nicole Shih of San Leandro, CA, and Jonathan P. Douglas and his partner Stephanie Leutert of New York, NY.
In addition to her husband and parents, Clara was predeceased by three sisters, Pauline, Anna, and Martha Hofmann; and three brothers, Otto, Edward, and Philip Hofmann.
