Rebecca Janes Mefford was born in Kentucky (according to census records). Her parents were Jacob Mefford and Sarah Critchlow who were married Jun3 8, 1852 (according to relative Jay Johnson*).

Rebecca first married Stephen Holliday on March 14, 1872 (information provided by Jay Johnson). Mr. Holliday died shortly after their marriage and Rebecca remarried.

The first record found by this writer was her marriage to Andrew Herington on December 18, 1874 in Knox County, Missouri, at the age of 21.

Andrew Herington was 27 at this time and had previously been married to Laura Walker in 1867 in Knox County, Missouri, by whom he had 5 children in 4 years (some either multiple births or premature). Four of these children, 3 sons and 1 daughter, died as infants. This is verified by a tombstone in the New Harmony Cemetery near Sue City in Macon County, Missouri, which reads, "The Four Infant Children of And. & Laura Herington." One child survived, Warner Herington, born July 30, 1871. Wife Laura died November 10, 1873, and is buried beside her children.

Sometime after their marriage in 1874 and before 1880, Rebecca and Andrew Herington moved to Montana. They are listed in the 1880 census in Lower Yellowstone and White Beaver in Gallatin Territory of Montana. Andrew was 34, a freighter, wife Rebecca 27, and Andrew's son Warner 9. Also living in the same household were 6 other men with occupations of saloon keeper, farmer, teamster, stock grower, storekeeper, and blacksmith. This apparently was a boarding house or hotel of some kind. Andrew was later known to haul cattle to market, and this may have been what "freighter" meant in this census.

In 1882, Rebecca and Andrew's only known child was born, Sarah Sadie Herington. The Heringtons divorced shortly after this, and Andrew remarried in 1884 to Minnie (maiden name unknown). By the time of the June, 1900 census, they were living in Green City, Sullivan County, Missouri. Minnie died on July 14, 1900 and, and Andrew again remarried 3 months later in November 1900 to Laura Virginia Colvin in Green City, Missouri. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1918 while on a cattle haul during a layover in Quincy, Illinois. He is buried at Green City Cemetery in Sullivan County, Missouri.

After Rebecca's divorce from Andrew, she remarried in 1898, to Jacob C. Caudle (1851-1920), an Iowa resident who had been born in North Carolina. He was a widower with 3 known children, Hattie, Cora Jeanette, and John Caudle. By the 1900 census, Rebecca and Jacob were living in Searsboro Town, Poweshiek County, Iowa. Jacob was a farmer. Also in the household were Rebecca's daughter, Sadie Herington 19, a dressmaker, and Jacob's son, John Caudle 17, a farm laborer.

In 1910, Jacob 59, and Rebecca 57, were living in New Sharon, Mahaska County, Iowa. In the special 1915 Iowa census, they were living in the same location. Jacob Caudle was listed as age 64 and Rebecca 62 and both were Hotel Keepers. Interestingly, in the previous year of 1914, Jacob had earned $300 and Rebecca $200. Jacob states he had lived in Iowa for 48 years, and Rebecca 17 years. Rebecca states her church affiliation is with the Friends Church, the place where she is buried. Jacob states Baptist, which may be the same.

In the January 1920 census, Jacob was 68 and Rebecca 66, still living in the same location of New Sharon, Iowa, and still listed as Hotel Keepers. Also living in the same household (probably in the hotel) were two women ages 22 and 58, one a maid and the other a cook at the hotel, and two girls age 14 and 12 with the last name of Cullen, listed as granddaughters (probably of the 58-year-old woman).

Just 4 months later, on May 22, 1920, Jacob died and was buried in New Friends Cemetery. Rebecca died 6 years later and was buried in the same location.
