OBITUARY-
Harry Hook, 84, of Austin, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Woodlyn Nursing Home in Inver Grove Heights.
Harry was born on Dec. 9, 1916, in Pleasant Valley, Iowa. His mother, Susan, died when Harry was young. The family moved to Waltham, and later to Brownsdale. Harry assisted his father, Rudolph, with farming and cattle drives.
Harry moved to Austin and, at age 15, took a position with Hormel. He was employed by Hormel for 44 years, and served as a foreman for many years prior to his retirement in early 1977.
Harry met his future bride, Dorothy Coddington, in 1936. They were engaged at Christmas 1938, and married on Sept. 2, 1940, at First Baptist Church in Austin. They attended First Baptist and later Grace Baptist Church of Austin.
Harry accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in the late 1950s. He later served his Lord in many ways. During his time as a member of Grace Baptist, Harry served as deacon (and, for a period, as chairman of the board of deacons); as a director of the church's AWANA program for children; and assisted with Grace's jail, bus and prayer ministries. For many years, Harry was a member of a committee that sponsored evangelistic events at the Mower County Fair. He also was a Gideon, and once smuggled Bibles into East Germany.
Harry also was involved in his community in other ways. He served as president of the Sumner Elementary School PTA, an auxiliary deputy sheriff and a city fire commissioner.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Hook; a sister, Gazeena McCloughan; children, David Hook, Pamela Hook Mayfield and Sue Deck; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Susan Hook, a sister, Anne Heimsness, and a brother, Henry Hook.
Service: Was at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church with Gordon D. Larson officiating.
Interment: Grandview Cemetery
Visitation: Was from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the reviewal an hour before the service.
