AMERICUS — Geraldine "Jerry" Howell Abbott, 87, of 768 U.S. Highway 19 South, Americus, died July 7, 2011, at her residence. A native of Plains, she was born Feb. 28, 1924, the daughter of the late Gordon B. and Effie Johnson Howell Sr. Mrs. Abbott was a high school graduate and attended the Patterson Business School in Americus. She was employed by the Bank of Commerce as a book keeper for a number of years; she was also a clerk at McConnell's. Mrs. Abbott was a member of Lee Street United Methodist Church and was also a member of Benevolence United Methodist Church until it closed.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Matt Stewart, the Rev. Eddie Braswell and the Rev. John Clements officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today, July 8, 2011, at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel, and at other times at the family residence, 768 U.S. Highway 19 South, Americus. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Lee Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 922, Americus GA 31709.

Survivors include her son, Aubrey Abbott of Americus; a faithful friend, neighbor and care giver, Nell Oliver; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burl Paul "Buddy" Abbott on Dec. 19,1999; two brothers, Clifton J. Howell and Gordon B. "Bubba" Howell; and two sisters, Opal Howell Peel and Helen Howell Bone.

Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
