Mid-Michigan Woman Dies From Meningitis

HOWELL, Mich. (WLNS) – Funeral home officials confirmed on Monday that meningitis has been named a cause of death for a 67-year-old woman from Howell.

Family members of Lilian Cary say she died on September 30, 2012, about a month after she received an epidural steroid shot from the Michigan Pain Specialists clinic in Brighton. Cary's daughter, Heather Andrus, says Cary suffered from degenerative disc disease and also had trapped nerves between her vertebrae. Andrus says her mother had been taking the steroid shots for several years for pain relief.

Cary's family says she was hospitalized on September 21 after she began showing symptoms of meningitis. After hospitalization, Andrus says her mother suffered a basilar artery stroke that left her clinically brain dead. Andrus and her father then made the decision to take Cary off of life support.

The clinic where Cary received the shot is one of four across the state that received a batch of infected steroid shots from a pharmacy in Massachusetts. In an answering service message that ran over the weekend, the Michigan Pain Specialists clinic said the infected batch of medication was used between August 7 and October 2. The other three facilities that received tainted steroids are the Michigan Neurosurgical Institute in Grand Blanc, Neuromuscular & Rehabilitation in Traverse City; and Southeast Michigan Surgical Hospital in Warren.

Andrus says her father also received the shot, but preliminary test results came back negative for meningitis. He says they are waiting on the Centers for Disease Control to give a final result.

Cary came to the U.S. in 1965 from Stoke-on-Trent, England, where she worked as a nanny. She became a U.S. citizen in 2004 and has lived in Howell for the last 12 years.
