He was the 6th of seven children born to John Hunt (12/25/1882 to 11/3/1962) and Annie Belle Lazear Hunt (5/2/1886 to 2/19/1976).
He was born and raised in Pine Arizona in the mountains close to the Tonto National Forest.
He went to school in a 4 room school house in Pine and graduated from there (high school) in 1937.
After high school graduation he went to BYU seeking a degree in Agronomy.
He was in college right at the critical part of World War II 1941 when every able-bodied man was being called up to serve our country. Approximately one semester before he was due to graduate he enlisted in the Army Air Corps on May 9, 1941.
With his college credits he was able to apply for Officer's Training so he was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. December 1941 he was stationed in Boise at Gowen Field as squadron Bombardier.
He met his wife Erma (Hessing) in the summer of 1942 at a church dance in Boise. After a 3 week whirlwind courtship, they were married October 12, 1942, at the house of her brother James Hessing in south Boise.
In December 1942 he was stationed at an air base in Seething, England. He was a bombardier trainer. He was a very good photographer too, so he was transferred to the Photography section where he documented bombing runs. His last assignment at the end of the war was that of Aerial Photographer Officer for the H-bomb testing of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. He photographed the dropping of the H bomb and its resulting action on the Bikini Island Atoll.
After the war in 1947 he returned to Boise and immediately went to work for the US Department of Agriculture. In 1949 he was promoted to manager of the Ada County Stabilization and Conservation Service which was affiliated with the USDA. He continued his military career in the Air Force Reserve as well as working for the USDA. He retired as a Lt. Colonel from both positions in 1977.
He was an avid sports enthusiast and loved his BSU Football team. He and his wife were very active in water skiing, snow skiing, bowling, RV'ing and golf. Both of them loved to ballroom dance and went dancing almost every week.
They spent winters in Hawaii for several years after they retired, and in 1982 they purchased a small RV. During the winters they lived in Mesa, Arizona. They remained active until 2004 when they finally sold their RV in Mesa and moved back to Boise permanently.
Art was residing at Diamond View Assisted Living at the time of his death. The family would like to acknowledge the excellent help and care that was given to him by Tina, Shannon Scott and the staff there. Thanks also go to Legacy Home Health for their outstanding hospice care.
Art is survived by his loving wife Erma Hessing Hunt and their 2 children Steven Hunt and Jennifer Hunt Kandler (Robert Kandler) of Boise. They have 7 grandchildren—Stacey Kandler Rogers (Jack) of Nampa; Lisa Hunt of Pocatello; Holly Kandler Smith (Matthew) of Boise; Bradley Hunt (Laura); Gregory Hunt (Jacci) of Boise; Mitzi Hunt Lambert (Eric) of Portland. He has 6 great grandchildren—Savannah and Lily; Gryphon & Stella; Kasiaha and Jayden. His 4 year old Grandson Brian Kandler preceded him in death in 1982. He was preceded in death by all of his siblings –Brothers John I, Alma, and James Vere Hunt; Sisters Mary Randall, Ina Mauzy, and Verdell Dowell.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Veterans of Foreign Wars.
