A memorial service was at St. Anne's Church, Sunfish Lake, MN, on Monday, Feb. 7. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's Church, Belle Plaine, in early spring.
Alba was born on March 1, 1913 at Clutier. She attended school in Clutier and high school at Mount Mercy, Cedar Rapids. She married Cyril Benda of Toledo on Feb. 6, 1934. They lived on farms near Clutier and then Toledo for the first 13 years of their marriage, and Alba worked on the farms with her husband. They moved to Tama, Iowa in 1947, and then to Belle Plaine in 1951. They operated a Gambles hardware store for years in Belle Plaine. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1957, Des Moines in 1959, Clive in 1960, and back to Belle Plaine in 1963. Her husband, Cyril, was killed in an auto accident in 1973. Alba moved to an independent apartment at Southview Senior Living, West St. Paul in 2006, where she could be near her sons, Michael and David.
Alba loved dancing, going to Danceland and Armar Ballroom in Cedar Rapids, and listening to Guy Lombardo, all of the big bands, and the Lawrence Welk TV show. She was known for her Bohemian pastries, kolaches and rollickies, dill soup, cucumber pickles, duck, and sauerkraut. In recent years, she enjoyed making frequent trips to the St. Paul farmer's market for fresh produce and flowers. She loved playing bingo, and was often seen with a friend at each side, giving them assistance as needed.
Alba is survived by her children, 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; her sister, Martha Husak Street of Johnston; a brother-in-law, Leo Benda; four sisters-in-law, Martha Strochota, Helen Benda, Marcy Benda Parker, and Sister Ludmilla Benda.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph Husak of Polk City, and Louie Husak of Belle Plaine; her parents, Agnes and Joseph Husak; her sister-in-law, Hilda Benda Zmolek; and brother-in-law John V. Benda.
