A native of Ballycotton, John Hyde attended the local national school before going on to St. Colman's College in Fermoy. A brilliant student, he got a Honan Scholarship to UCC which he did not take up as he entered the Jesuit Order in September 1927. Following his ordination, he taught in Galway and in Tullabeg and also in the Jesuit Institute in Miltown, Dublin, where he became professor of theology.

An outstanding philosopher, a profound theologian and a widely read scholar, Father Hyde was a small, quiet, self-effacing man, who usually preferred to listen rather than to speak and when he did speak - in his gentle, East Cork-lilt - he used simple words as much as possible. Hailed as a holy man with the reputation of healing the sick, he used to travel across County Offaly and Dublin riding his bike, wearing a one time black suit - green with age - which previously belong to Father John Sullivan, a fellow Jesuit likewise hailed as a saint, visiting homes and hospitals. Authoring a few books, including the popular "I want to Pray But...", he died of prostate cancer in Dublin.
