US Congressman. He was born one of five children (he also had two brothers and three sisters) in Chicago, Illinois, to Thomas J. Igoe and Helena Scott Igoe, and was educated in local public schools including Holden School before attending Stratton College and St. Ignatius College (later Loyola University), all in the Chicago, Illinois, area. After his education, he worked in the printing and publishing business beginning in 1907. On October 20, 1909, he married Catherine G. Jordan and they had a son, James J. who was born on January 17, 1911. He then entered public service and served as a City Clerk for Chicago, Illinois, from 1917 to 1923. He also served as a Delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1920, 1928, and again in 1936. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Democrat, he then served Illinois's 6th District (Seventieth and to the two succeeding Congresses) in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1927 to 1933. He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination to the Seventy-Third Congress in 1932. After his term in the United States Congress expired he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Thomas Joseph O'Brien. After his time in public service had ended he became a successful businessman and he became the President of a large real estate business, the James T. Igoe Building Corporation in Chicago, Illinois. He served as Chairman of the Illinois Delegation to the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco, California, which was held in 1939 and 1940. He also continued with his real estate pursuits beginning in 1942. He also served as Director and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Mercantile National Bank in Chicago, Illinois, from 1955 to 1961. He passed away in Evanston, Illinois, at the age of 88. His funeral was held at the SS, Hope and Charity Roman Catholic Church in Winnetka, Illinois, and he was laid to rest in the All Saints Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum in Des Plaines, Illinois.
