Viola May Auer, 98, died March 18, 2015 in Thermopolis, Wyoming.

Viola May Auer was born on November 12, 1916 in Lander, Wyoming to Charles and Mabel Ellen (Freese) Inness. Her mother passed away on January 17, 1917 and Viola was raised by her grandparents Ira and Eliza Freese in Lander. Her brother Elmer and sister were raised by their father in Nebraska.

She was also raised around six uncles and one aunt. She remembered when her youngest uncle became engaged and bought a beautiful diamond ring. To be sure it was a diamond, Viola scratched his mirror. It was! Life was interesting while growing up.

Viola attended school in Lander graduating from Fremont County Vocational High in Lander.

Viola married John Henry Auer on August 15, 1935. They were members of the First United Methodist Church. They went to live on John's family ranch thirty miles from town, no electricity, eighteen miles from help, and five miles from highway. Viola worked right along beside John on the ranch for thirty years. Her allergies forced them to sell the ranch, buy three smaller ranches, and eventually moved to a one acre place, still out in the country. John's parents were Swiss immigrants and they took many trips to Switzerland to visit family.

In 1939 Viola and John went to Oregon to meet her brother and sister who she had never seen or known. The next year she met her father, step-mother, and step-brothers Lyle, Bernard and Raymond for the first time. What a joyous event!

John passed away on December 20, 1990 and Viola moved to the Wyoming Pioneer Home in Thermopolis. While in Lander Viola was a charter member of the Fremont County Cowbelles for fifty years and also a fifty year member of Extension Club work.

Over the years Viola has crocheted many afghans, baby blankets, doilies, bookmarks, and Christmas ornaments for family and friends. She enjoyed working puzzles, playing games and cards. She volunteered to Play Mrs. Santa at the Pioneer Home Christmas Parties. She was avid follower of the Denver football and baseball teams.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, husband John, sister, and brother, uncles and aunt Verla Rhoads and two half-brothers. She is survived by one half-brother, Bernard and wife Lou, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
