Helen was born in Shelby, Polk County, Nebraska to William T. and Mary E. (McMeekin) Inness. She was their first born. Helen enrolled in nurses training at Omaha Methodist which was interupted by the death of her mother. She returned and graduated then enrolled in pediatric training in Chicago. She practiced nursing at Bryan Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska then transferred to Children's Hospital in Denver. In Denver she met Wendell and they married in 1940. Helen used her nurses training while raising her 3 children and volunteering in hospitals wherever Wendell's military career took them.
