John P. Irwin 87, retired President of the Automobile Club of Southeastern Ohio, died December 18, 2006, at St. Vincent's Hospice in Indianapolis. Calling will be Thursday, December 21 from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with services immediately following the calling at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center - Broad Ripple. Private graveside services will be held December 22 at 11 a.m. at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. John P. Irwin was born December 2, 1919, in Greenfield, Ohio, to Clayton Campbell and Ethel Priddy Irwin. Joining the United States Army after high school graduation, he was stationed in Washington D.C. and served with the Signal Corp Detachment at the White House during World War II. Following the war, he used the benefits of the G.I. Bill to complete his degree in Business Administration at Miami University of Ohio in 1948. Mr. Irwin began his career with the American Automobile Association working as a field representative for the Cincinnati Club in the Wilmington and Lebanon, Ohio, offices. Moving to Portsmouth, Ohio, he became Club manager of the American Automobile club of Southeastern Ohio in 1951. He and his wife, Edna Prater Irwin, worked together for 35 years, to expand motorist services and World Wide travel opportunities for the residents of Southeastern Ohio. Under Mr. Irwin's leadership, branch offices were established in Athens, Gallipolis, and Ironton, Ohio, and mergers with the Automobile Clubs of Chillicothe, Marietta, and Steubenville, Ohio, were completed. During his years of service the Automobile club of Southeastern Ohio grew from 2,000 to 80,000 members. He retired as President of the Automobile Club of Southeastern Ohio in 1985. A community leader, Mr. Irwin was a member of the Rotary Club, served as the Past President of the Lions Club, the Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Central Ohio Industrial Council. He was recipient of the Chamber's Outstanding Citizen Award and the originator of the Ohio Southland concept for tourism in Southeastern Ohio. A 20 year resident of the Indianapolis area, Mr. Irwin and his wife, Edna, moved to Fishers in 1986 to be closer to family. During retirement, he served on the Conner Creek Board of Directors, volunteered with Meals On Wheels, and taught fishing at Camp Delafield for Children. Fondly known as "Papa John" by the children, he taught basic skills and made fishing fun for the campers. He was an avid tennis player and enjoyed playing the game for over 50 years. He played tennis with the Silver Foxes at the Indianapolis Racquet Club for many years. He was married to Edna Prater Irwin for 60 years. She preceded him in death, as did his parents and brother, James. Survivors include: Daughter, Julia Irwin Richter; son-in-law, James A. Richter; grandchildren, Krista, Jamey, and Neha Richter.
