Mary Blair Paxton was the daughter of William Paxton (6 mar 1815 to 3 Oct 1853) and Julia Ann Lyle Moffett (13 Mar 1806 to 24 Jun 1851). Also, she was the granddaughter of James Moffett and Mary Stuart Moffett (at Bethel Presbyterian Cemetery) plus James Paxton (4 May 1790 to 5 Mar 1848, at Falling Spring Presbyterian Cemetery and Elizabeth Blair Paxton (17 Nov 1793 to 7 Oct 1824).

She married Alfred Henry Jackson, in Nov 1858. They had two daughters, Ella Bennett Jackson (23 Sep 1859, Mrs. Matthew Edmiston) and May Paxton Jackson (27 May 1862, Mrs. Blain Ward Taylor). Sadly, they were only united for 5 short years, before her husband died from a serious wound at the Battle of Cedar Mountain in Culpeper Co., Virginia.

On the 28 July 1860 Weston, Lewis Co., VA census, I found Attorney at Law Alfred H Jackson, 24, with $3250 in real estate, born in Ohio; Mary B Jackson, 19; Ella B Jackson, 10/12, born in Virginia. The appear to be staying in an unlisted hotel with a lot of other people. Minter Bailey was the hotel keeper, family #1240, giving the only clue. No street or house number was listed. Interestingly, "Alfred H Jackson, Ass't Marshall" is listed at the top of the census page. meaning he took the census survey himself.

Mrs. Mary Blair Jackson was born Nov 1841* (day unlisted) in Lewisburg, WV, to parents William Paxton (born n Rockbridge Co., VA) and Julia Moffett (born in Augusta Co., VA). She was a widow (named unlisted). The informant was Mrs. B W Taylor of Elkins, WV. On 7 Jul 1918, she died in Leadsville District, Elkins, Randolph Co., WV. West Virginia Her body was removed to Lexington, VA. At the time, this would have been to what became Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery, today called Oak Grove Cemetery. Standard Certificate of Death #9626.

"JACKSON, MARY BLAIR, widow of Col. Alfred H. Jackson, C.S.A., died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Blain Taylor of Elkins, Sunday night, July 7th, age 78 years. Daughter, Ella Jackson married Dr. Matt Edmiston, and Lieut. Andrew Edmiston is her grandson. Buried beside her husband at Lexington, Virginia." Published in The Weston Independent, Weston, Lewis Co., WV, dated 16 July 1918.

*Note: her marker says she was born in 1840 ,so it is listed on top of this site. There is a C.S.A. iron star marker for her husband beside it
