JACOBS, MARTIN "MARTY" 87, beloved husband, father, step-father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on November 15, 2012 in Birmingham, AL. Marty was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 10, 1925 and lived a full life, with a deep love of family, work, and friends. Always the gentleman, Marty's intelligence was matched only by his gentle patience, curiosity and interest in others. He could be described as kind, generous, reliable, dignified and loving. he has an upbeat nature and was often complimented on his ability to whistle a fine tune. As a young man, Marty attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and then went on to earn a degree in engineering from Yale University in 1945. He attended Midshipman's School at Columbia University, where he received his naval commission, then was an ensign on transport ships in the Pacific. At the age of 21, Marty was offered a job at US Steel, where he remained employed for 44 years. There he served in a multitude of capacities: from process control to metallurgist chief of development, and control along with new product development, to Engineer for the International Department. After being transferred to Birmingham, Alabama, Marty held the position of Head of Customer Technical Service for the southeast region. Martin Jacobs was active in many organizations, including being on the Boy Scout Troup Committee, and he was president of the Cerebral Palsy Association of Pittsburgh. After retiring, he served as Chairman of the Society of Retired Executives and was a docent and volunteer at the Birmingham Museum of Art. In addition to his museum membership, Marty was a member of Temple Emanu-El of Birmingham, and Levite Jewish Community Center where he was and ardent swimmer. Martin Jacobs was predeceased by his devoted first wife, Phyllis R. Jacobs; daughter, Ellen Lee Jacobs; and nephew, Barry Jacobs. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Gay Vitemb Jacobs, who after many happy years of marriage, was his constant support in his struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. He is also survived by sons, Jim Jacobs (Olivia), Marc Jacobs (Denis Leger), brother, Lou Jacobs, Jr. (Kathy); step-children Jerry Vitemb (Brenda), Shayne Vitemb (G.U. Krueger), Jim Vitemb (Debbie), Edie Vitemb Ochoa (James). He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Ross Jacobs, Elliot Jacobs, Jared Vitemb, Matthew Vitemb, Benjamin Krueger, Rachel Vitemb, Avery Vitemb, Gabriel Ochoa, Jules Ochoa, as well as his nephews, Jordan Jacobs and Gary Moss. Memorial Services will be held at Temple Emanu-El at 2100 Highland Ave at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, November 18. Rabbi Jonathan Miller and Cantor Jessica Roskin will officiate. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the home of Gay Jacobs 3918 Shannon Lane, after interment Sunday and on Monday November 19, 2012 between 4:00 and 8:00pm. The family is grateful to the caring staff of 5 North at Fair Haven.
