He was born on July 11, 1913 in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, the son of Cornelius and Flora Dell (Bartle) James. In 1928, he was elected the first state FFA president and was active in showing steers and barrows at the Southern Jr. Livestock Show during his high school years. After attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he came to Portage in 1935 to work for the Farm Security Administration in Columbia, Marquette, and Green Lake counties. He married on October 7, 1939 at the Caledonia United Presbyterian Church. In 1940 he moved to rural Pardeeville and managed "The Hickories," a farm that raised purebred Shorthorn cattle, until 1981. Throughout his Life, he was actively involved in community service. He was a member of the Caledonia United Presbyterian Church and had served as church treasurer. He had been Marcellon Town Board Chairman; served on the Columbia County Fair Board and Wisconsin State Fair Board; a director of City Bank and Trust, Portage; Director and Vice President of the Wisconsin Livestock Breeder's Board; member of the Marcellon School Board and Pardeeville Area School Board; and served on the Columbian County Board of Adjustments. Farming and working outdoors was a lifelong love. He also enjoyed raising and showing Shorthorn cattle and judging livestock at shows and state fairs in the Midwest.
