Susan ‘Susie’ Jane Stevens, 80 of Eskasoni, passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 15, 2014, surrounded by her family.
Born in Malagawatch, she was the daughter of the late John Joe ‘Malikowej” and Sarah (Paul) Joe.
She was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. Susie Jane was a devoted wife and a mom to so many, and dedicated her life in keeping her family together. She was a kind and generous friend and volunteered a lot of her time helping others over the years. As a craftsperson, she helped support her family and neighbors by making baskets, crafts, knitting mittens and socks, and crocheting. She was the founding member of the Eskasoni Ladies Auxiliary and was instrumental in bringing the 4-H Club and Red Cross to Eskasoni. She served as a Band Councilor for Eskasoni and a Welfare Officer for over 30 years. She received her Bachelor of Social Work degree from Dalhousie in 1991 and worked at Mi’Kmaq Family until she retired.
Susie Jane is survived by her daughters, Annie ‘Gibbet’ Stevens (Jim), Doreen Stevens (Vance), Dawn Stevens, Annie Leigh Stevens, Amanda Blaire Francis, Debra Ginnish, Eleanor Kabatay; sons, Kenny Stevens (Maria), Kennis Paul (Martha); brothers, Charles Joe, Keith Joe and Dana Joe (Mabel). Also surviving are her grandchildren, Tuma, Koty, Carmen, Vance, Reese, Craig, Justin, Brittany, Nathan and great-grandchildren, Damaris, Denae, Ryan, Jij, Dre, Dasan, Jewl, Dallas, Coral, Lyric, Aveda, Adeva, Chasin Michael and great-great-grandchildren, Malik, Maris, Roenik and Viola.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Noel Stevens; sisters, Mary Ruston, Margaret Paul, Evelyn Ginnish and brothers, James Joe and Donald Gordon Joe.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 after 7 p.m. at the Gabriel Center. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church with Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni.
