Elmer A. Johnson, 39, died May 3, 1996, at Alaska Native Medical Center. A memorial service was held at the Native Assembly of God, 11th Avenue and Ingra Street. The Rev. Doris Fellows officiated.

Mr. Johnson was born June 30, 1956, in Juneau, and was a lifelong Alaska resident. He was employed by the University of Alaska as a kitchen helper. Mr. Johnson attended the Native Assembly of God and Anchorage Christian Center. He enjoyed Native art, wood carving, photography, gardening and hiking. He loved animals and was people- and community-oriented. His family said: ''Elmer helped with any project that needed it. He was a gentle person with a heart of gold.''

Mr. Johnson is survived by his mother, Agnes Dalton Johnson of Anchorage; sisters, Elizabeth Williams of Sitka and Diane Johnson of San Angelo, Texas; brothers, Kenneth Johnson of Anchorage, Bernard Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mark Johnson and Mike Johnson of Anchorage; cousin, Paul Demmert of Kake, and aunt, Fannie Brown Hanlon of Klawock; and many nieces and nephews. His father, John, preceded him in death.
