Merlene J. Arters, 64, of 618 W. Seventh St., died at 9:10 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 23, 2001) in WCA Hospital. A Jamestown resident since 1968, she was born Oct. 18, 1937, in Stepney, Jamaica, the daughter of the late Daniel and Muriel Brown Johnson. She had been employed in the custodial department of the Jamestown Public School System for 29 years. She was a member of Emmanuel Temple Church. She will be remembered as a fun person who always enjoyed life and helping others. She was a devoted worker, a skilled dress maker and loved to shop. She is survived by her husband, Warren G. Arters, whom she married May 2, 1972, in Kingston, Jamaica; two daughters: Veronica Cooper of Jamaica and Charmaine Bloomfield of Philadelphia; a son, Winston Linton of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; four sisters: Caroline Ferguson and Alberta Johnson, both of England, and Myrtle and Julian Willis, both of Jamaica; and two brothers: Alvin Johnson of Philadelphia and Vivian Johnson of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Perleta Johnson and Mercedes Thompson.
