BERNARD JOHNSON, 81, died Aug. 8, 2001, at the Mary Conrad Center after a lengthy illness. A service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Eighth Avenue and E Street. Visitation will begin at noon. Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Eugene, Ore., to Roy and Lillian Johnson. Over several years in the 1930s and '40s, he and his father, mother and two of his sisters moved to Alaska. Mr. Johnson joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II in the Pacific. After the war, in Seattle, he met and married his first wife, Evelyn. They moved to Alaska in 1946 and lived in veterans housing before settling in Spenard and having four children. He eventually went to work for SeaAirmotive. His family said that for many years he was chief mechanic and was well respected in his field. In 1979, he married Louise Nelson. Living in the Jewel Lake area, they were happily married until his death. He loved anything to do with airplanes and passed that love on to his children, three of whom earned their pilot's licenses. His sister Jean and many other people remember him as having a kind and generous heart. The family added: ''His home health care aide, Carlos DeLeon, led him to accept Jesus Christ as his lord and savior. Carlos will officiate at Bernard's funeral.'' His twin sons, Scott Allen and Kirk Roy, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Louise; daughters, Barbara and Cheryl; sister, Jean; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Arrangements were by Evergreen Memorial Chapel downtown.
