Longtime Douglas resident Sylvia Martha Fleek died Jan. 18, 2010, at her home. She was 93.
The youngest of four children, she was born Dec. 28, 1916, in Globe, Ariz., to Elina (Kutomaki) and John Johnson. While still in high school, she met George Elroy "Sonny" Fleek, and they were married on July 22, 1933. In 1936, they moved to Alaska and settled in Douglas, where they raised their five children.
During her early years in Douglas, she worked at the Douglas cannery for a short time, then as a waitress, a short-order cook and a clerk at the Butler-Mauro Drug on Franklin Street in Juneau. Later she worked for the Territory of Alaska and retired in 1980 from the state of Alaska Department of Revenue.
While Sonny was still alive, the couple enjoyed dancing and getting together with longtime friends. They owned a boat and liked to go fishing after work during the summer when the weather was nice.
After retiring, she volunteered at the Juneau Visitor Center for more than 10 years. She enjoyed meeting and assisting tourists at the Marine Park kiosk. She also liked to travel with friends and visited Spain, Italy, Greece, Finland and the Panama Canal. She also was active in a senior exercise group at the Juneau Racquet Club.
Gardening was a passion, and anytime the weather would permit, she could be found outside tending and planting flowers in her garden.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father and siblings; husband of 41 years, Elroy "Sonny" Fleek, who died in 1974; and in more recent years, her son, William "Bill" Fleek, and daughter, Vadra Boss.
She is survived by her children, Richard Fleek, Jean Feakes and Beth Lamb, of Douglas; grandchildren, Adam Fleek and Anne Feakes, of Juneau, Steven Adams, Elaine Adams and Elizabeth Murray, of Florida; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
There was a memorial service at the Resurrection Lutheran Church, 740 W. 10th St., in Juneau. A reception followed in the Community Room at the church. A private burial of her ashes was at Eagle's Cemetery on Douglas Highway.
