SERGEANT DIED AUG 19, 1864 AT MARIETTA GA OF WOUNDS (received in action).
-Illinois States Archives
In the widow's pension, two different documents describe two different place of death: Died of wounds received at Utoy Creek (6 Aug 1864) and the other, died in Army of the Ohio hospital at Marietta, Ga. Burials from Utoy Creek are in sections E and F; hospital at Marietta, section G. From the AG report regimental history: At Utoy Creek, on the right of Atlanta, the Regiment, on the 6th of August, 1863, with the Brigade, made an unsuccessful assault on the enemy's works, and lost 71 men killed, wounded and missing. Among the wounded were the Lieutenant Colonel, 3 Captains and 1 Lieutenant. 3 Sergeants and 1 Corporal were killed on the field.
Listed at Utoy in AG: W L Jordan, Peter M Lohnas, Sgt Charles B Hitchcock, Sgt John H Lane, Sgt Andrew B Pike, Corp Robert M Denney, James Essex, George W Rhodes, James B Henrietta, William M McHenry, Peter Shoe, Amos Timmerman. So I think Marietta is the correct location of his death as he is not one of the Sergeants names in the list from Utoy Creek. However, other men who died in the General Field Hospital Army of Ohio are listed in the hospital grave yard. So maybe Eli was sent home.
His widow, Susan J. Moore Jones, received a Widow's pension and was paid to Sept, 1868, when she remarried to Tracy Sykes. Three children received Minor's pension until reaching the age of 16: Jennie E., born 13 Feb 1860; John R. M., born 24 Mar 1862; Sarah S., born 2 Apr 1864. They were living in Macon County, Mo. Post Office: Callao, Mo.

Not sure if it is the burial or cenotaph. It has a different middle initial, E instead of C, and different company, A instead of B.
