He enlisted on July 8th, 1863, at New York City, New York, for three years service at the age of 21, and was mustered into service as a Private in Company A of the 11th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on July 13th, 1863. When his regiment was consolidated with others then organizing in New York City, New York, he and his company were designated as Company D of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 1st, 1863. He served with the regiment through its service in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.
Private Jones was killed in action on September 1st, 1864, at the Battle of Jonesboro, Georgia.
