Served in 3rd Iowa Calvary, Company D, during Civil War. He recieved $60 bounty for enlisting on 8 February 1864 at the age of 36.
A letter in the pension records for John S. Morgan who was in command of his division stated --- took sick about May 10, 1865 with pneumonia ... he had returned from the campaign with General Wilson through Georgia which was attended with considerable hard duty ausing a large amount of troops to become sick ... ordinarily he was a man of good health and stood the service well, he was a sober man and good faithful soldier ... I was in Atlanta, Georgia at College Hospital to see him when he died.
Records show he had recieved clothing amounting to $18.29 and was given a total of $140 bounty.
He left behind his wife Lovica and children Elmeda age 17, Gideon age 16, Mary Elizabeth age 14, George age 11, Nancy age 9, Sarah age 7, ArMinta age 4, and the baby America age 2 on their farm in Davis co., Iowa.
