Name - Despite that the stone says "Berta", when Roberta's name is shortened, it's Bertha (for example, on her death certificate and index, and a letter published in the Macon Telegraph from Bertha to the life insurance company in November 1890). Other family trees list her middle name as "McCrea" (unknown why).

Despite that the stone says 1870, all censuses and other family trees show a birthdate of 1872 and specifically, 24 Mar 1872, in Georgia. Because people going through the cemetery may reference "1870" as her birthdate in their search, I am leaving "1870" in the birth information field of this memorial.

Despite that Riverside Cemetery and the gravestone says her deathdate is 28 May 1927, her North Carolina paperwork says 27 May 1927. She died in Asheville, Buncombe, North Carolina, USA. Because people going through the cemetery may reference "28 May 1927" as her deathdate in their search, I am leaving "28 May 1927" in the birth information field of this memorial.

Roberta was one of several children born to Abner Franklin Jones (1838-1926; FAG# 56199154) & Julia Amanda (Edwards) Jones (1850-1922; FAG# 56199636).

Abner & Julie's children:
*Roberta "Berta/Bertha" (1872-1927; FAG# 56883526) who married James S Campbell (died 1890; FAG# 56884021)
*Robert Edward (~1875-1898; FAG# 56199898) - does not appear to have married
*Samuel (born 1878, died after his father's 1926 death)
*Hugh Willett (1882-1962; FAG# 84939339) who married Florence Smith (1890-1963; FAG# 84939227)
*James Campbell (1886-1957; FAG# 56199555) who married Louise Wright
*Mary (born ~1889, died before 1900)

At the age of 16, Roberta S. Jones married James S. Campbell on 29 Nov 1888 in Bibb County, Georgia.

Tragically, Roberta becomes an 18 year old widow when James dies of heart failure, aggravated by Bright's disease on Oct 03, 1890. According to James' obituary, they had no children, but Roberta's obituary states she passed away in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles (Helen Browney) Westall (FAG# 40868405). Mystery - Browney is found in the 1900 & 1910 censuses, as a 4- and 14-year-old, living in the home of Roberta's parents and Roberta. She is listed in both censuses as a niece of Roberta's parents with Texas listed as the place of birth for both of her parents. As an adult, Browney lists her parents' birthplaces as Georgia. In the 1957 obituary of James Campbell Jones, the brother of Roberta, Mrs. Charles Westall is referred as a sister of James.

During the 1900 & 1910 US federal censuses, Roberta is living with her parents. They do not readily appear in the 1920 census. Her mother Julia passes away in 1922 in Tennessee. Roberta's father Abner passes away in 1926 in Swannanoa, Buncombe, North Carolina, USA.

Roberta passes away from cancer at the age of 55 in 1927 in Asheville, Buncombe, North Carolina, USA. The name on Roberta's death certificate is Bertha Jones Campbell. It appears that she may not have remarried.

Here is the letter she wrote and publicly published:
From the Macon Telegraph, Macon, Georgia, Sunday morning, November 16, 1890, page 7, column 3
MACON, GA., Nov. 11, 1890
