Virgie I. Backus, 80, of Parkersburg, died March 9, 1996 at her residence.

She was born in Hebron, a daughter of the late Leonard and Zula Olive Lamp Jones. She was a St. Marys High School graduate and a 1937 cum laude graduate of St. Joseph's School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She worked at St. Joseph's Hospital as a supervisor and was a nurse at Colin Anderson Center and in Wirt County. She was a member of the DAV, American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary and American Association of Nurses. She was a member of the Lubeck Church of Christ.

Surviving are her husband, Denzil Backus; one daughter, Rose Mary Murphy of Parkersburg; one stepdaughter, Charlotte White of Parkersburg; one stepson, Steve Backus of Ontario, Canada; one sister, Betty Morey of Parkersburg; one brother, Sam Jones of Miamisburg, OH.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Norville Jones; one sister, Nellie Eddy; and one infant sister.

Services were Monday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home in Parkersburg. Burial was in the Mount Olivet Cemetery.
