RUTH REBECCA AALBERS
LATIMER - Ruth Rebecca Aalbers, Latimer, died on Tuesday, 13 Jul 1999, at the Mercy Medical Center-Cedar Rapids, of Cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Zion Reformed Church, Sheffield. Burial will be in the Zion Reformed Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home, Latimer.
Ruth was born 19 Aug 1920, on a farm 6 1/2 miles northeast of Latimer to Jerry C. and Lena Plagge Jurgens. She attended the Plain View country school and Latimer High School. After graduating in 1941 from Central College in Pella, she taught music and English for two years in the Owasa school system, followed by two years at Huxley.
She was united in marriage to Marion N. "Max" Aalbers, of Alton, on 15 May 1945. After living in Pella and Sioux Center, where Max taught vocational agriculture, the family returned in 1952 to Ruth's birthplace and farmed there until August of 1983, when they moved to Latimer. Max died the following January.
Ruth's life revolved around her faith, her family and her love for music. For more than 50 years, she taught piano and organ to students in the area. As a member of Zion Reformed Church, she served in many capacities through the years: church organist, pianist, youth group leader and Sunday school teacher. She held positions of leadership in Reformed Church Women's Ministry on the local, classical and synodical level. At one time, she represented Pleasant Prairie Classes on the National Board. In 1987, she was honored with a lifetime membership in this organization.
In addition, she was actively involved in the Gideon's International Bible Society, Park Society, Over 60's Club, Joy Fellowship and Neighborhood Club. She was a piano player for the Alexander Kitchen Band. In 1993, Ruth received the Outstanding Service Award from the Latimer Community Club.
Survivors include her son, Richard and his wife, Rachel, of Mt. Vernon; her grandchildren, Daniel and wife, Shelly, of Hampton, Benjamin of Oveido, FL, and Abigail of Mt. Vernon; as well as a sister, Margaret Ruppert, of Northwood.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and sisters, Wilma Koenen, Leona Mollenbeck, Evelyn Hovey and Dorothy Mussehl.
Ruth's legacy of joyfully serving others was motivated by her great love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Moved by God's grace, she spent her lifetime following her master's command to love her neighbor, as herself. As a daughter of Zion, her quiet witness touched many lives, enriching and inspiring them by her humble but powerful example. She will be greatly missed.
