George W. Jurgens, 69, of Fergus Falls, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at his home, surrounded by family and in the arms of his loving wife, after a three year battle with cancer.
He was born on March 15, 1938, in Milbank, S.D., to Leonard and Matilda (Schell) Jurgens. George graduated from Milbank High School in 1956, and went on to attend Minneapolis Business College in Minneapolis.
On Aug. 30, 1958, George married Margaret Mary Ward at Annunciation Catholic Church, in Revillo, S.D. Margaret and George were to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in August. Over the years, the couple resided in Milbank, S.D., Hallock, Devils Lake N.D., Fergus Falls, and Sun City West, Ariz.
George was employed by Otter Tail Power Company for 35 years, retiring in 1996. In 1980, George and Margaret developed and ran one of the largest duck decoy business in the nation, Northwind Decoy Company, which is now owned by Cabellas Sporting Goods.
George enjoyed the game of hockey and coached PeeWee and Bantam level hockey teams. In addition, George was a hockey official for many years officiating more than 500 hockey games at both the high school and college level, including games in Canada.
An accomplichment that George was very proud of was helping to organize and coach the first ever girls hockey team in Fergus Falls in 1973, The O'Meara Shamrocks.
George will always be remembered as a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He was never afraid to share his opinion. You may not have agreed with his ideas, but he always had good intentions. He would like to be remembered as an honest and fair individual who wasn't afraid of hard work.
George was passionate about golfing, fishing, and hunting. He enjoyed playing cards at the "Corner," his daily breakfasts at the Viking Café, and his winters at his home in Sun City West.
He was a member of the Elks for 43 years, Our Lady of Victory Church since 1968, The Fergus Falls Hockey Association, Pebble Lake Golf Course, and Ducks Unlimited and was a past president of the N.D. Power Use Council. He was nominated by the City of Fergus Falls as Entrepreneur of the year.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Tillie Jurgens, his brother Donald and grandson Mackenzie Knutson.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret; daughters, Brenda (Randy) Knutson of Fergus Falls, Nancy (Paul) Aughinbaugh of Fargo, N.D., and Cheryl (Mike) Haberlack of Savage; and son, Ben (Amy) Jurgens of Fergus Falls; 10 grandchildren, Joe Sauer, Bekka and Samm Knutson, Alex, Amy and Eric Aughinbaugh, Megan, Anna and Thomas Haberlack and Olivia Jurgens; one brother, Bob Jurgens of Sun City West, Ariz., and his godmother, Angeline Jurgens of Wilmont, S.D.
