Kathleen “Tiny” Balbaugh, 92, of Cheboygan, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at home. Kathleen was born in Bay City, Michigan February 25, 1922, the daughter of Frank and Florence (Bollert) Kellogg, and moved to Cheboygan with her family as a young child where she resided until her death after a slow decline.

Growing up, she enjoyed writing, scrapbooking, and playing the cello and piano. On March 3, 1943 in Cheboygan, she married Joseph Alwyn Balbaugh Jr. and settled down to start a family after his discharge from the army. Kathleen was accomplished in rug making and worked on her loom five days a week up until recent years. She also made hundreds of quilts which she gave to anyone she knew who was getting married and sold many of these and her rugs to raise money for her beloved Wesleyan Church Missionary Ladies where she was the treasurer for many years. She was a devout Christian and lived her life as an example to others in her goodness and strength. She also enjoyed baking, working in her gardens, and sewing.

She worked at the Cheboygan Daily Tribune for many years, Kretchman’s, and then went into real estate for a time. Later, she became the first woman bus driver in Cheboygan and was presented the Robert Wagner Bus Driver of the Year Award three years running. Many of her “bus kids” will remember her taking the whole busload to A&W for a treat and dressing up for all occasions. She especially liked St. Patrick’s Day. She retired from driving after 12 years.

She was an inspirational mother and loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed attending events where they played sports or performed in different activities. She would secretly pick out whoever she thought was having a difficult time and give them extra attention and love to ensure they felt special.

Kathleen is survived by her children Donald (Lois) Balbaugh of Cheboygan, Thomas (Denney) Balbaugh of Perry, FL, Susan (Terry) VanHorne of Kalamazoo, MI, daughters-in-law Patricia (Balbaugh) Hascall of Zilwaukee, MI and Jeannette Balbaugh of OK., and grandchildren Angela (David) Korte, Beth (Mathew) Kavanaugh, Christina Kiefer, Diana Balbaugh, Elyse (Kory) Midas, Evan, Jacob, and Krystal VanHorne, Bridget Husong, and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by husband, Joseph Balbaugh Jr, sons Lyle Balbaugh and Joseph Alwyn Balbaugh III and grandson Joseph Alwyn Balbaugh IV. Kathleen was the last surviving of her siblings, Franklin Kellogg, Dortha (Judd) Stoklosa and Geraldine Morrison.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 11:00AM, with the family greeting friends beginning at 10:00AM, at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home. Rev. Paul Megge will officiate, burial will be Pinehill Cemetery.

She always said she wanted flowers while she was alive and not at her funeral. To honor her wishes, please make memorial contributions to the Cheboygan County Humane Society or the Wesleyan Church.
