Jeanette K. Backus, 96 of Mexico died peacefully Thursday at her home, surrounded by family. She was born in Mexico, the daughter of the late Frederick L. and Jessie Button Kellogg. She was a hairdresser and owned and operated Jeanette's Beauty Shop in Mexico from 1960-1992. She was a member of the Mexico United Methodist Church, the Red Hat Society and the Mexico Historical Society. Jeanette was a member of the Emerald Crest Golf Course in Palermo. Her husband B. Olin Backus died in 1995 and her son Richard F. Backus died in 1944. Jeanette is survived by her two daughters, Judith Backus of Brewerton and Brenda (James) Hotchkiss of Mexico; four grandchildren, Peter (Ann) Hotchkiss, Jennifer (Charles) Prosser, Andrew Hotchkiss and Phillip Hotchkiss; seven great-grandchildren, Alana Hotchkiss, Collin Hotchkiss, Whitney Hotchkiss, Malloy Hotchkiss, Connor Prosser, Alex Prosser and Evan Prosser; along with one great-great-grandchild, Cole Peter Hotchkiss Flynn. uneral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Mexico United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Mexico Village Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, at the Harter Funeral Home, 9 Washington Avenue, Mexico. Contributions in Jeanette's memory may be made to Friends of Oswego County Hospice, P.O. Box 102, Oswego, NY 13126 or the Mexico United Methodist Church.
