She graduated from Kouts High School in 1951. Joan was full of compassion for all things living. She tried rescuing every injured animal that crossed her path, and was always hoping to make a positive impact in the lives of the people around her. She spent many years as an active member of Kouts Presbyterian Church; singing in the choir, planting flowers, running the youth group, serving as an Elder, and dusting the pews when needed. One of her biggest passions was her volunteer work with VNA of Porter County Hospice Program. She volunteered in many roles, but the one closest to her heart was providing support and engaging directly with the patients and their families in their homes. In her spare time, during her healthy years, she enjoyed horseback riding, swimming, bicycling, traveling, and reading. She was fortunate to spend the past four years living in Bellevue, WA with her son and daughter-in-law, Kurt and Nikki Adams and their two daughters, Halle and Kayla, where she loved being a part of her granddaughters' daily lives and received the best possible care during a time of failing health.
Joan is also survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Christy (Baird) and Patrick Wendt and her youngest granddaughter, Kalista Joan Wendt, who all earned many frequent flyer miles traveling between Chicago and Seattle to visit "Grandma Joan" as often as possible.
Joan is also survived by her mother, Betty Kelso and her sister and brother-in-law, Glenda and Gene Greer, all of whom currently live in Valparaiso, IN and will miss her very much.
Finally, she is leaving behind her love of the past 20 years, Robert Marshall of Valparaiso, IN, and has now been reunited with her much adored husband, Jack Baird, whom she married in 1970 and who passed away in 1982.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 23rd at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Kouts. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 22nd from 4:00-7:30 PM at Kosanke Funeral Home in Kouts, IN. Memorials can be made to Kouts First Presbyterian Church or to the VNA of Porter County Hospice.
