He was the son of James C. and Elizabeth (Strong) Kelso and married Carolyn "Carrie" Small - 08 Jan 1896. His obituary follows:

Mr. John D. Kelso, aged 62 years, died at his apartment int he Hood Hotel in Chattanooga, Sunday morning, December 18, 1927, after a long illness. He was reared here and for a while was engaged in the shoe business in Fayetteville, removing to Chattanooga. He had the happy faculty of making and remaining friends, and the announcement that he had quitted the walks of life brought sorrow to every acquaintance. He had been a member of the Methodist Church since early years. The remains were brought to the residence of Mr. Theo Hereford Monday morning, and at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church by Dr. W. T. Haggard and Dr. J. D. Keith, burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. Surviving him are his wife, three sisters, and two brothers: Mrs. L. J. Warren, of Memphis, Mrs. Lizzie Rawls, of Nashville, Mrs. Susie Ralston, of Fayetteville, Charles Kelso of Marion Junction, and James Kelso of Selma, Alabama.
