Family stories have it that the young Andrew went to sea as a cabin boy on a ship either owner or captained by his brother-in-law. It goes on to say that there was bad blood between the two and after a long sea voyage the ship returned to its home port of Maitland WITHOUT the young Andrew Kennedy cabin boy.
The official report given was that the lad had been swept overboard, but privately the crew members told a different version, saying that the captain became furious with young Andrew and physically tossed him overboard. Ships at sea were a world unto themselves in those days and the captain was the absolute ruler. It would be unheard of to challenge the captains authority or control.
Attempts to secure more detailed information have been unsuccessful so far, but the memory of Andrew Kennedy is fondly held by the succeeding generations of his kinsman.
