Mrs. Mary E. K. Coard for more than forty years a resident of Jacksonville passed away at 2:15 o'clock Thursday morning last week at her residence, 127 Diamond Court, following an extended illness. She was the widow of Francis M. Coard, who preceded her in death March 23, 1924.
Mary Eunice Knapp was born at Waverly June 4, 1846. On Nov. 8, 1865, she was married to F. M. Coard, veteran of the Civil war and a resident of the Waverly community. He engaged in the undertaking business. They continued to reside in Waverly until 1890, when Mr. Coard's business was destroyed by fire which swept part of the business section on the south side of the square.
In the same year Mr. and Mrs. Coard moved to Jacksonville where Mr. Coard was in the undertaking business for about 25 years. Mr. and Mrs. Coard never had any children of their own, but five orphaned children found love and care in their home. Three of these were a nephew and two nieces, who survive. They are: Mrs. Mary Radford of LaMesa, Calif., Mrs. Morton Hackney of San Diego, Calif., and J. L. Coard of Indianapolis.
During her last illness, Mrs. Coard was cared for by a cousin, Mrs. Ida Haggard. Neighbors and friends were frequent callers at her home. She was a faithful member of First Baptist church, which she joined shortly after moving to Jacksonville from Waverly.
Funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon at the residence, in charge of Dr. Joseph R. Harker.
The remains were brought to Waverly, where funeral services were held at the Baptist church Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, in charge of Rev. Wm. Johnson of Jacksonville.
Burial was in Waverly cemetery.
