Amelia Kunze, born of Fredric Kunze, Germany (1820-1901) and his second wife Lucy Henderson Scribner, Illinois (1837-1910)was the oldest of four children of that marriage and the sixth child of Fredrick. The family moved to Arkansas in 1866, but after three months moved on to Lamar, Barton, Missouri in the fall of 1866. Amelia lived there until marrying Jesse Calvert 1 May 1881. Amelia was 15 and Jesse was 19.
Shortly after 1900 the family moved to Chehalis, Washington by covered wagon. After working the first winter there, they moved by train to Coulee City, Washington and homesteaded land near Leahy. Jesse built their home into the side of a hill with a wooden front and a sod roof. Amelia carried water from a lake a half mile away for their use. By 1910 the family moved back to the West side of the state to Everett, Washington. They worked the winter there then went back to the property in Leahy. From 1910 they moved around the Northwest, including Idaho, but eventually settled in Sumner, Pierce, Washington where she lived from the 1920's until she died in 1955. She was visiting family in Moses Lake, Grant, Washington when she died and was returned to Sumner, Pierce, Washington to be buried beside her husband Jesse.
She was described by one of her grandchildren as, "...an attractive, proper, dignified, upright, religious woman." There were nine children born of the marriage, six girls and three boys.
