78th (E) Co. 6th Regiment,
USMC AEF FRANCE
11 October 1918.
REPORT OF OPERATIONS FROM OCTOBER 2nd to OCTOBER 10th INCLUSIVE.

On the morning of October 2nd, 1918 a patrol of eight men and one officer was sent north from parallel Pacha to reconnoitre the boyau Landshut and the parallel Elbe and Essen. Finding it evacuated by the enemy, one platoon advanced by infiltration into the trench Elbe. At 6:30 P.M. the same date, the entire company advanced in like manner and established connection to the west with the 96th Company, 2nd Battalion. The Company on our right (to the East) could not be located by our runners, in the trench Elbe.

At 6:00 A.M. October 3,1918, a memorandum order was received by the C.O. 78th Co. to attack behind a barrage, which should start at 5:50 A.M. and advance at the rate of 100 meters in 4 minutes. According to the order all companies of the Battalion were to be in the front line, each company in four waves. The 78th Co. advanced in accordance with the above mentioned order. Liaison was immediately established, on the left with the 96th Co. but it was impossible to do so on the right, until about 6:30 A.M. when the 78th Co. connected with the 79th Co.

The advance was made in a direction about 10° West of North. In the advance machine gun nests were encountered and put out of action, and the dugouts were cleaned up as thoroughly as the speed of our advance permitted. Most of the prisoners were captured in dugouts before they had time to emerge after the barrage passed. Excellent liaison with the 96th and 79th Co.'s was kept up at all times, and the advance was made by the companies almost in a single line.

Our frontal objective was reached at about 8:30 A.M., but owing to the similarity between the line which was consolidated, and the true objective, we consolidated about 350 yards east of our proper objective.

After we had consolidated, we suffered casualties from sniper maphine guns, trench mortar and light artillery fire which harassed us from the front and left flank.

This line was held until 3:50 P.M. October 5th, 1918, when the 78th Co. advanced toward the North, with its left flank resting on the main road running toward St. Etienne. We consolidated on the first ridge south and about one-half of a kilometer from St.Etienne. No resistance was met but enemy artillery fire caused a few casualties.

At 4:00 A.M. the company returned to its former position, the road on top of Blanc Mont.

At 12:15 A.M. Oct. 10, 1918 the company was relieved by a company of the 72nd Brigade.
