John was the eldest son of James and Elizabeth Sifford LaFarree and had siblings Augustus(5 March 1826) who served in the Civil War and died 3 August 1865, Cornelia (31 March 1831)(M.B.Richmond, Indiana), Samuel (22 March 1834-16 May 1866, Umatilla, Oregon), James H.(26 September 1837), George W. (9 February 1841), Frances (12 April 1844)(Samuel Swope). He was a farmer. John married Mary Ann Gilbert and they had children: William, Blanche, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, John, Anna, and George. John died in Troy Township where he farmed.
