Mary M. Hines QUINCY Mary M. (Laffey) of Quincy, formerly of South Boston June 6, 2009. Wife of the late Thomas F. Hines. Loving mother of Maureen & husband Doug Sargent of Hanover, Gerard J. Hines & wife Karen of Middleboro, and Dennis Hines & wife Kathy of Norwell. Devoted "Nannie" of grandchildren: Daniel Sargent, Carrie Sargent, Kelly Hines-Browne, Ryan Hines, Micaela Hines, MaryKate Hines, and the late John Hines; and great grandchildren: Danny, Amelia, Abigail, and Nikolas. Mary (Laffey) Hines was born in Boston in 1918. She was the devoted daughter of Nora (Hanlon) Laffey and Martin Laffey both from Galway, Ireland. She grew up in South Boston and attended the Gate of Heaven Primary School and St. Augustine's High School, where she was class President. She was a lifelong friend of Mary Bowen of South Boston, and many stories about Mary and "Bo" were shared with her family. With a talent for acting and oratory skills she was awarded a college scholarship, but unfortunately was unable to attend. During WWII, Mary worked as a civilian for the U.S. Coast Guard in order to release servicemen for active duty in the war effort. Mary was proud of that service. She married Thomas F. Hines, also of South Boston, in 1946. They had to compete for a reception room in a Boston Hotel, as the 1946 Red Sox, who were in the World Series that year, were filling up all the Boston Hotels. Mary and Tom settled in the Germantown Section of Quincy to raise their family. Mary was very involved in the support of school activities and was a faithful, active member of St. Boniface Parish. Mary loved children and was a very popular "matron" in the lunch program at Snug Harbor Elementary School. In particular, she often reveled in tossing a baseball around with "the boys" on the playground during recess. An avid walker, Mary tallied up many, many miles walking up and down Palmer St. for exercise and thus, became a familiar sight over the years to friends and neighbors in the Germantown community. Mary and Tom were happily married until Tom's death in 2004. Most of all Mary's life was about her never ending love and devotion to her family and her faith. Mary will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
